What to Expect During Your First Well-Woman Exam

“What is a well-woman exam?” you might wonder. Well, you might be surprised to learn that a well-woman exam is an important part of your gynecological health care.

Our team at Arsenio Medical in Lawrence, New York understands the importance of women’s health care. That’s why we’re proud to offer well-woman exams, which are comprehensive examinations that all women—from those going through puberty to those navigating menopause—need as a part of maintaining their health.

What is a well-woman exam?

A well-woman exam combines a regular physical with special additional exams and services that take a look at your reproductive health. With younger women, we generally discuss things like birth control, the HPV vaccine, and menstrual health.

With older women, we also take a look at things like cholesterol, blood sugar levels, and bone density. We also discuss your health when it comes to going through perimenopause and menopause.

During your exam with one of our physicians, you can expect to discuss your full medical history, including any past pregnancies and miscarriages, surgeries, family history, and prior health problems.

What kind of tests are involved?

Your well-woman exam will differ depending on your age and the unique issues that you want to discuss. Some of the assessments that we perform more commonly during a well-woman exam include:

To prepare for your exam, you’ll want to bring a list of any questions that you may have about your reproductive health. We’ll need to know whether or not you’re sexually active and if you’re considering becoming pregnant, and can answer any questions about birth control and your options.

We’ll also want to discuss your menstruation, so be prepared for questions about your regularity, your flow, and any abnormalities like acute pain or unusual discharge.

It’s time to find an internal medicine physician to manage your health as a woman. Call us to schedule an appointment today.
